SUMMARY
Primary thallus of whitish or pale grey areoles. Areoles 0.1-0.3(-0.5) mm diam., granular to minutely squamulose, scattered to confluent, or crowded into warty aggregations ca 1 mm diam. Photobiont cells 7-14 (-19) μm diam.. Cephalodia scattered, 0.3-1.2 mm diam., dark brown, granular or wrinkled, containing Stigonema.
Anamorph: conidiomata pycnidia, 0.26-0.5 mm tall, 0.16-0.4 mm wide, ellipsoidal to elongate-ampulliform or skittle-shaped, black, borne terminally on short stalks to 0.5 mm tall. Conidiogenous cells 14-20 x ca 1.5 μm, ± cylindrical, proliferating percurrently. Conidia 7-11 × 0.8-1 μm, falcate, the apex rounded, aseptate, hyaline.
Teleomorph: pseudopodetia to 2 mm tall, 0.3-0.5 mm diam., pin-like, unbranched, the surface granular-areolate. Ascomata apothecia, 0.5-1 mm diam., hemispherical to subglobose, glossy black. Epithecium dark olive-green, K–, N+ red. Hymenium 70-80 μm tall, I- (except for I+ blue outer coats of asci). Hypothecium dark brown, K–, N–, with underlying tissue of the pseudopodetium reddish brown, K+ purple-reddish. Interascal tissue of paraphyses 1.5-2.5 μm diam., the apices ± slightly swollen to ca 3 μm diam. Ascospores (14-) 16-21 (-25) × 6.5-9.5 μm.
Chemistry: thallus C–, K+ yellow, KC–, Pd± faintly yellow, UV+ yellowish (atranorin).
