Thallus: like Hypogymnia physodes but Pd–, and the thallus with patchy reddish brown coloration. Lobes are usually narrower, more irregularly branched and elongate, often with small, basally constricted lateral branches, sometimes black-bordered and elongate-streaked at the apices, with large pores on the underside at branch nodes and towards the apices. Soralia are irregular, gnarled and lip-shaped. Anamorph and teleomorph: not observed. Chemistry: cortex K+ yellow; medulla C–, K–, KC+ red, Pd–, UV+ pale violet-blue (atranorin, physodic acid, 3-hydroxyphysodic acid and vittatolic acid).
