Family: RamalinaceaeGenus: Bellicidia
SUMMARY
Thallus: dull green, grey-green, white or fawn, granular-verrucose, not isidiate or sorediate. Photobiont chlorococcoid, cells 5-12 (-14) μm diam, ± globose.
Anamorph: conidiomata pycnidia, to 200 μm diam, ± immersed, appearing black but walls thin, red-brown, K+ purple. Conidiophores absent, conidiogenous cells cylindrical, probably proliferating percurrently. Conidia 5-9 × 2-2.5 μm, cylindric-ellipsoidal, 0- (to 1-) septate, hyaline, thin- and smooth-walled, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Teleomorph: ascomata apothecia, (0.2-) 0.3-0.8 (-1) mm diam, discoid to shallowly convex, ± sessile, dark purple-brown to black, margin thin, paler than disc. True exciple and hypothecium dark red-brown, K+ purple, but outermost edge of exciple sometimes hyaline. Hymenium 35-45(-50) μm high, hyaline or pale red, I+ blue, the epithecium not staining green in KOH. Interascal tissue of paraphyses 1.5-2 (-2.5) μm diam, simple or rarely forked above, not or only slightly swollen at the apices (to ca 3 μm diam). Asci 31-41 x 9-12 µm, cylindrical to saccate, short-stalked, the apex rounded, thick-walled with a conspicuous apical cap 7-9 µm thick that stains dark blue in KI except for a central ± conical apical cushion, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged fasciculately, (17-) 21-24 (-30) × 2-2.5 μm, elongate-bacilliform to cylindrical, (0- to ) 3- (to 5-) septate, the septa sometimes concentrated towards the mid part of the spore, hyaline, thin- and smooth-walled, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Chemistry: thallus C–, I–, KOH–, Pd–.
