Dendrostilbella smaragdina
Anamorph: conidiomata absent. Synnemata scattered or in large clusters, (600-) 800-1200 µm tall, the stipe cylindrical or slightly tapering, to 80 µm diam. at the base and 35 µm diam. near the fertile head, unbranched, smooth, dark blue-green to almost black when mature, sometimes deriving from a greenish to ± black subiculum. Hyphae of stipe 1.5-2.5 µm diam., with thin dark brown walls. Conidiophores with 1 or 2 basal verticillate branches, to ca 30 µm long and 1-1.5 µm diam., septate, with percurrently proliferating terminal and intercalary conidiogenous loci, the intercalary loci on short peg-like branches immediately below septa; Collarettes and intercalary thickening absent or inconspicuous. Conidia 2.8-3.4 x 1.7-2 µm, cylindrical to cylindric-ellipsoidal, hyaline (bright blue-green en masse), aseptate, thin-walled, biguttulate, smooth, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Teleomorph: not known.
Notable for its bright blue-green coloration. Some published descriptions (including that of the type) suggest that the conidia are significantly narrower than shown here (see Seifert 1985, as Tubercularia smaragdina).
Dendrostilbella prasinula is similar, but has synnemata that are paler and yellow-green rather than blue-green.
On rotten wood of conifers or Rhododendron, presumably saprotrophic.
Reported from VC17 Surrey, Suffolk, VC40 Shropshire, and VC64 MW Yorkshire. Possibly under-recorded due to confusion with D. prasinula.
