Mycosphaerella podagrariae
Anamorph: conidiomata acervular, to 250 µm diam., amphigenous, subepidermal, peridium poorly developed except around the ostiole where it is black. Conidiogenous cells in a palisade lining the conidioma wall, shortly cylindrical, proliferating sympodially. Conidia 35-75 x 2.5-4 µm, vermiform, linear or subclavate, obtusely tapering at both ends, 1-septate, hyaline, guttulate.
Teleomorph: ascostromata perithecia, 90-120 µm diam., usually epigenous, black, globose to slightly flattened, superficial and surrounded by a dense hyphal network, densely crowded, almost seeming pseudostromatic. Interascal tissue not present. Asci 50-60 x 14-16 µm, 15-25 per ascoma, saccate to subcylindrical, with a thickened apex, sessile, 8-spored. Ascospores 18-19 x 5-6 µm, ellipsoidal to almost ovoid with rounded ends, 1-septate, the septum median, upper cell slightly broader than the lower one, not constricted at the septum, hyaline, smooth-walled.
The conidiomata are acervular and thus belong to Phloeospora, but a combination into this genus has not been made. Description partly adapted from an unpublished account by John David.
On living leaves of Aegopodium podagraria, causing leaf spots.
Common throughout Britain and Ireland.
