SUMMARY
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: ascomata 30–70 (–100) × 4–15 mm, clavate to capitate or spathulate, often strongly laterally compressed, not viscid, the entire surface fuliginous to black and hirsute due to the presence of spines; fertile part clearly differentiated from the stipe, occupying the upper part of the ascoma and extending to between one third and one half of its length; stipe terete, 2–6 mm diam.; setae abundant, acuminate, dark brown, projecting one quarter to one third of their lengths above the hymenium. Interascal tissue composed of filiform paraphyses 2–3 µm diam., not gelatinised or agglutinated, longer than the asci, pale brown, somewhat enlarged and straight or curved to circinate above. Asci 165–280 × 15–18 µm, cylindric-clavate to clavate, the apex rounded, fairly thick-walled but not fissitunicate, with a J+ apical pore, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged in parallel, (60–) 75–95 (–100) × 5–6 μm, narrowly cylindric-clavate and very gradually tapering towards the base, mid brown, usually 7-septate, fairly thick- and smooth-walled, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
