SUMMARY
Thallus crustose, thin, smooth or locally cracked, deep red-brown to green-brown or dark brown. Isidia and soralia absent. Photobiont Trentepohlia.
Anamorph: conidiomata pycnidia, not often seen. Conidia ca 2 x 0.5 µm, ellipsoidal, straight or ± curved.
Teleomorph: ascomata perithecia, 120-250 (-300 µm) diam., prominent, black, globose and strongly domed, the involucrellum purple-brown, dulling in K. Peridium dark or hyaline. Interascal tissue composed of paraphyses, simple or rarely branched, periphyses not seen, hymenial gel I–, K/I– . Asci 52-65 x 8-10 µm, clavate-cylindrical, the wall thin throughout, functionally unitunicate (dehiscence by rupture of the apex, with no extruded inner layers), I–, K/I–, the apex rounded and without a ring, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged biseriately, 13-20(-24) × 3.5-5 μm, narrowly fusiform, 3-septate, hyaline, rather thin-walled, without an epispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
