SUMMARY
Thallus epilithic, areolate to subsquamulose. Areoles dispersed or somewhat contiguous through vegetative division, rounded to very irregular, the margin not raised from the substratum, when fertile (0·65–) 1·1–2·6 (–5·8) mm diam. Upper surface pale rusty red to bright orange, often paler towards the margin, smooth or more often uneven, sometimes flattened but often strongly convex, dull to somewhat shiny, sometimes with concentric, wavy markings. Epinecral layer present or not, to 17 µm thick. Upper cortex 60–95 µm thick, uppermost usually with small orange crystals, cells very difficult to distinguish, rounded, to 5µm diam., becoming elongated in the lower part.
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: ascomata immersed apothecia (1–) 2–10 (–62) per areole, the disc rounded (70-) 100-250 (-400) µm, brown, sometimes blackening, sunken or level with the thallus, smooth to very uneven, sometimes with a conical tip in the centre, not pruinose, the thallus not forming a raised rim around the disc. Proper exciple hyaline. Epithecium yellow brown to golden red. Hymenium 180–250 µm thick. Interascal tissue of paraphyses 0.8-1 µm diam., sparsely branched and anastomosing, the tips ± cylindrical. Subhymenium hyaline to greyish, with much oil, to ca 50 µm thick. Asci to 150 × 30 µm. Ascospores 3–4 × 1–1·5 µm, narrowly ellipsoidal to bacilliform.
Chemistry: UV− or UV+ yellow-green, K−, KC−, C−. No lichen substances detected by TLC.
