Family: MycosphaerellaceaeGenus: Mycosphaerella
SUMMARY
Anamorph: claimed to be Ramularia urticae Ces. (1863), but the connection has not been proved. That has colonies that develop on living leaves.
Teleomorph: ascostromata perithecial, aggregated in extensive patches but not coalescing, 150-180 µm diam., subepidermal, erumpent through the surface layers of dead host stems, ± globose, with a broad hardly papillate ostiole. Peridium composed of several layers of dark brown quite thick-walled angular to epidermoid cells to 12 µm diam. Interascal tissue absent. Asci developing in a basal fascicle, 45-55 x 8.5-10 µm, broadly cylindrical, almost sessile, the apex rounded, thick-walled and fissitunicate, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged biseriately, (15-) 16.5-19.5 x 4.8-5.5 µm, fusiform-ellipsoidal to slightly clavate, with a slightly constricted septum that is usually slightly supramedian, the apex and base both obtuse, the upper cell often slightly broader, thin-walled, smooth, without an epispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
