Family: MagnaporthaceaeGenus: Gaeumannomyces
SUMMARY
Mycelium: with hyphae occasionally in strands of 2-4, hyaline to brown, straight or flexuous, 1-4 µm wide, sometimes with terminal or lateral brown hyphopodia to 18 µm wide and which are circular, elliptical, slightly lobed or angular and with a pore to 2.5 µm diam.
Anamorph: Cadophora sp. Conidiogenous cells 6-19.5 x 2.5-4 µm. Conidia 3-6.5 x 1-2 µm, very variable in shape, mostly longer than broad with one end rounded and the other pointed, curved or even sigmoid.
Teleomorph: Ascomata 280-565 µm diam, neck to 242 µm long and 48-116 µm diam at the base and bearing few to many long radiating brown hyphae, superficial, mostly single, sometimes aggregated in pairs or threes. Peridium to 54 µm thick, outermost dark-walled cells angular to rounded and occasionally elongated into hairs, merging into a middle zone of rather large thick-walled cells and an inner zone of 4-6 layers of polygonal compressed cells. Interascal tissue of paraphyses (when present) to 200 µm long and 5-10 µm wide at the base, tapering to 2.5 µm, delicate, often constricted at the septa, periphyses 1-1.5 µm diam. Asci 65-135 x 9-16 µm, clavate, apical ring indistinct but staining with Congo red. Ascospores (35-)40-70 x 3-5(-6) µm, mostly cylindrical, some fusiform or sigmoid, with rounded ends and often very slightly tapered, slightly curved (more so towards the base), hyaline, 3- to 5-septate with up to 8 septa when mature, half twisted in the ascus.
