Family: BotryosphaeriaceaeGenus: Diplodia
SUMMARY
Anamorph: conidiomata pycnidia, to 250 µm diam., on bark, shoots, leaves and cone scales, solitary to gregarious, initially immersed, becoming erumpent, unilocular, black, globose to ovoid, opening by an apical papillate ostiole. Conidiomatal wall thick, composed of several layers of angular cells with heavy pigmentation around the neck region. Conidiophores absent. Conidogenous cells developing from the inner wall of the conidioma, 15-20 x 5-6 µm, cylindrical to lageniform (sometimes swollen at the base), not proliferating or with a single percurrent proliferation, collarette and periclinal thickening not visible. Conidia 28–45 × 10–16 μm, rather variable in shape but usually cylindrical to clavate, rounded at the apex, basal end blunt, yellowish-brown, eventually turning dark brown, rough-walled (ornamented on the inner surface of the wall), usually non-septate, later some becoming 1-septate, without a perispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Teleomorph: not known (though some evidence exists of a heterothallic sexual cycle).
