Family: ChaetosphaeriaceaeGenus: Chaetosphaeria
SUMMARY
Stromata absent.
Ascomata perithecial, 110-160 µm diam, globose or slightly flattened, hardly papillate, the ostiole periphysate, black, faintly verrucose, coriaceous, superficial, solitary or in small clusters, sometimes almost hidden within the extensive pinkish brown mycelial mat. Peridium composed of an outer layer of strongly melanized and completely occluded textura angularis with cells to 6 µm diam, and an inner layer of hyaline thin-walled compressed cells. Interascal tissue deliquescent at maturity. Asci 55-75 x 4-5 µm, cylindrical, short-stalked, thin-walled at all stages, the apex obtuse, without a clearly distinguishable apical ring, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged biseriately, 8-9.5 x 2.5-3.5 µm, ellipsoidal to ovoid-ellipsoidal, sometimes slightly inaequilateral, hyaline, not constricted at the median septum, thin-walled, faintly verrucose, without mucous sheath or appendages.
Anamorph: Chloridium sp. Conidiomata absent. Conidiophores 25-100 µm long, 3-4 µm diam at the base, somewhat irregular in form but usually gradually tapering, golden brown, rarely branched, hardly distinguished from the vegetative mycelium, bearing solitary conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells 13-28 x 2-3 µm, cylindrical or gradually tapering but often rather irregular, sometimes constricted at the base, golden brown, with a single terminal conidiogenous locus, proliferating percurrently, the conidia formed in short chains slightly (4-5 µm, rarely to 12 µm) below the apex and with a conspicuous flared collarette. Conidia 1.5-2 (-2.5) x 1-1.5 µm, cylindrical or slightly obconical, hyaline, aseptate, thin-walled, apparently smooth, covered in mucilage.
