Family: CeratostomataceaeGenus: Arxiomyces
SUMMARY
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: stromata absent. Ascomata perithecia, 70-120 µm diam., with a cylindrical neck 100-120 µm in length and ca 30 µm diam., superficial, appearing dark brown to black due to the spore mass contained within. Peridium thin-walled and translucent, composed of irregular mid brown thin-walled globose to angular cells 15-25 µm diam., cells of the neck ± hyphal in construction, 12-15 µm in length and 4-5 µm diam. Ostiolar setae not present, ascospores aggregated into a large dark brown mass at the tip of the neck. Interascal tissue not seen. Asci not seen, but immature ascospores are present in irregular clusters of four and the wall is assumed to be evanescent. Ascospores 4.5-5.5 (-6) x 4-5 (-5.5) µm, globose to broadly ellipsoidal, aseptate, dark brown, thick- and smooth-walled, without a clear germ pore or slit but with a large area (often 2-3 µm diam.) on one lateral face of some spores that is somewhat thinner-walled, without an epispore, or gelatinous sheath or appendages.
