Lichenochora coarctatae
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: ascomata perithecia, in small groups or more rarely individually scattered, 150-220 µm diam., ± globose, the upper part erumpent from the host thallus and often becoming almost superficial due to host degradation, black, smooth-walled, with a minutely papillate ostiole. Peridium composed of dark brown strongly melanized prismatic cells, the melanization sometimes irregularly formed giving a suggestion of cepahlothecoid plates. Interascal tissue composed of very broad thin-walled paraphyses to ca 11 µm diam. that degenerate at maturity, strongly constricted at the septa, the ostiole lined with periphyses. Asci 55-62 x 14-16 µm when mature, clavate, short-stalked, very thin-walled, without any distinct apical structures, 8-spored (sometimes 4- to 6-spored fide Hafellner & Berger 2000). Ascospores arranged biseriately, extremely variable in size and shape, (13-) 15-21.5 x (6-) 7-9 µm, L/W ratio 1.5-2.5: 1, strongly constricted at the ± median septum, hyaline, thin- and smooth-walled, without a perispore or appendages.
On thalli of Trapelia coarctata and T. placodioides, apparently causing some degaradation to the host tissues.
In GBI, recorded from VC25 E Suffolk, VC46 Cardigan and VC58 Cheshire.
