Epithamnolia xanthoriae
Anamorph: conidiomata 100-220 µm diam., superficial, scattered or loosely aggregated, cupulate, dark brown to black, developing from a basal stromatic cushion. Conidiomatal wall thin, composed of dark brown elongate cells. Conidiophores formed from the basal stroma, elongate, filiform, hyaline, straight or curved, septate and branched. Conidiogenous cells not well distinguished from conidiophore cells, terminal or developing laterally from just below septa, 5-10 x 1.5-2 µm in size, proliferating sympodially. Conidia (53-) 57–63 (-70) × (1.9-) 2.1–2.8 (-3.2) μm, filiform, aseptate or with 1 (-5) inconspicuous septa, the apex acute, tapered towards the base, hyaline, smooth, guttulate, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Teleomorph: not known.
Not assessed; currently only known from a single GB collection but perhaps overlooked. Possibly a recent immigrant.
Differs from other lichenicolous Hainesia species by the conidial dimensions and host preference.
A parasite of apothecia of Xanthoria parietina.
In GB&I, currently only known from VC8 S Wiltshire. The species has been reported as common in central Europe and is likely to be more widely distributed in Britain.
