Thallus: squamules 2-6 mm diam., scattered to contiguous, attached by the entire underside or with slightly upturned margins, pale to dark brown above, ± matt, irregularly orbicular to somewhat lobed, ± uniformly pale to brown below. Thallus 250-450 µm thick. Upper cortex 50-90 µm thick, composed of ± hyphal cells 7-12 µm in length. Epinecral layer usually present but missing in the vicinity of the ascomata, ca 20 µm thick. Medulla composed of ± globose cells 7-15 µm diam., lower cortex not clearly differentiated from the medulla. Rhizoidal hyphae 5-6 µm diam., ranging from hyaline to dark brown. Isidia and soralia absent. Photobiont chlorococcoid.
Anamorph: conidiomata pycnidial, laminal, immersed. Conidia 3-4.5 x 1.5-2 µm, cylindric-ellipsoidal, aseptate, hyaline, smooth-walled.
Teleomorph: ascomata perithecia to 650 µm diam., globose, fully immersed. Peridium pale, darker around ostiole. Interascal tissue absent, periphyses 30-40 x 3-4 µm diam. Asci 70-90 x 10-15 µm, cylindrical at least when young, sometimes somewhat swollen when the asci are fully mature, thin-walled and not fissitunicate, without an ocular chamber, 8-spored. Ascospores 12-16 × 5.5-7.5 μm, ellipsoidal to fusiform-ellipsoidal, hyaline, aseptate, smooth and thin-walled, without an epispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Assessed by Woods & Coppins (2012) as of Least Concern. The species is widespread, though inconspicuous.
Scattered throughout Great Britain and Ireland. BLS map here.
