Glonium graphicum
Anamorph: unknown.
Teleomorph: ascostromata to 1.5 x 0.25 mm, superficial, formed on an effuse subiculum composed of thick-walled dark brown rarely branched hyphae. Peridium with side walls composed of very dark, thick-walled brown-black cells, basal region similar, with a layer of yellow-brown thin-walled angular cells forming the cavity floor. Interascal tissue of branched and anastomosed pseudoparaphyses 1.5-2 µm diam, apically encrusted with minute yellow-brown particles, tending to degenerate at maturity. Asci 95-125 x 9-11 µm, cylindrical, short-stalked, the apex rounded, thick-walled and fissitunicate, not staining in iodine, 8-spored. Ascospores (16-) 18-21 x 5.5-6.5 µm, fusiform-ellipsoidal, the ends acute to obtuse, constricted at the single median to slightly supramedian septum, fairly thin-walled, hyaline, smooth, without a distinct epispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Not formally assessed, but known only from two sites in native old-growth pine forest in the Scottish Highlands. It is likely to be overlooked, but should be considered as threatened pending further survey work.
On old dead wood and bark of Pinus sylvestris.
Reported from Abernethy Forest and Glen Affric (VC96 E Ness).
