Cladonia verticillata
General description:
Similar to Cladonia cervicornis subsp. cervicornis, but with less well-developed and especially broader, basal squamules and the taller podetia (to 5 cm) with more regular scyphi, which are ± abruptly tapered to the stalk and form proliferating tiers, in 2-3(-5) levels from the centre of the scyphus.
Conservation status:
Assessed by Woods & Coppins (2012) as of Least Concern.
Distribution:
Widespread, especially in SW England, Wales and Scotland. BLS map here.
Habitat:
A locally common subspecies, especially in heathland sites and mine spoil-heaps.
