Phylloblastia fortuita, the central part of the image shows a mass of periphyses hanging down from the top of a perithecium (stained with ammoniacal erythrosin). Although difficult to interpret each individual periphysis, they are composed of basal isodiametric cells and one or two oblong apical cells. The shape and thickness of these apical cells provide a useful identification feature in Phylloblastia.
