Description:

Verrucaria squamulosa, periphyses, showing the presence of some branches. In the type description, van den Boom & Brand (2003, in Linzer biol. Beitr. 35: 547-553) state that the periphyses in V. squamulosa are "simple to sometimes branched." For V. macrostoma they state that the periphyses are "rarely branched." Further observations are required to find out whether there are any significant differences in the periphyses of these two related species.
