Description: 

Verrucaria squamulosa, section through thallus (stained) showing the presence of a thin epinecral layer overlaying the cortex. The epinecral layer in V. squamulosa is usually thinner (c. 5-6 µm thick) than in V. macrostoma (often 10-15 µm thick).
