Description:

Verrucaria squamulosa, section through part of a perithecium, showing the well-developed involucrellum spreading away from the exciple, the space between largely filled with coarse paraplectenchyma with rounded cells. This tissue between the exciple and involucrellum appears to be better-developed in V. squamulosa than in the related V. macrostoma. If further observations confirm this character to be reliable it may form a useful additional character for specimens which are difficult to assign.
