Description:

Lecania coeruleorubella, blastidia mounted in K. The distinction between blastidia, soredia and isidia is often difficult to discern. In the image a chain of three blastidia can be seen, each budded from its neighbour. By simply viewing an image such as this it is not possible for the viewer to readily interpret these as blastidia, or as soredia which happened to arrange themselves adjacent to one another during the mounting process. Careful examination of the way the structures develop, and how distinctly connected they are, is required.
