SUMMARY
Cap: 3-5 cm in diameter, campanulate-convex then more or less spread out with a domed centre; margin at first almost inrolled, remaining incurved for a long time, thin, non-serrated. Surface dark sepia-brown to almost blackish, dry, fibrillose to somewhat rimose (fissured or cracked) with a silky sheen. Gills: crowded, free from the stem, whitish then quickly salmon pink. Spore print: pinkish brown. Stem: 4-6 x 0.4-0.6 cm, cylindrical, pruinose at the top, a similar dark colour to the cap, covered with longitudinal fibrils, paler towards the base. Volva: 1.5 cm high, approximately 2 mm thick, split into 2-4 lobes, white then turning grey-brown to ochraceous particularly on the inner surface, outer surface has a slightly granular-felty texture. Spores: 7-9 x 5-6 μm, pink under the microscope, thick-walled, ellipsoid-subcylindric, although quite variable, often stretched to the well-developed apicule (point). Cheilocystidia: utriform-lageniform, 60-100 x 10-25 μm.
