SUMMARY
Sori completely filling infected ovaries, which become dark brown and are sometimes hidden by the host glumes. Spore mass powdery, dark brown to almost black. Sterile cells intermixed with the ustilospores, 12-20 µm diam., globose to broadly ellipsoidal, the wall 1-1.5 µm thick, hyaline, smooth or with patches of faint reticulations. Ustilospores 23-26 (-27) µm diam., globose to subglobose, light to mid brown. Ustilospore wall ca 2 µm thick, strongly and coarsely reticulate, the reticulations 2-3 µm diam., with a gelatinous sheath 2.5-3 µm thick visible in fresh collections.
