Family: ConiochaetaceaeGenus: Synaptospora
SUMMARY
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: ascomata perithecia, 250-300 µm diam. and 300-350 µm tall, subglobose to ovoid, not papillate, not collapsing when dried, scattered or in small clusters, superficial, setose, dark brown to black. Setae 100-140 µm long and 6-7 µm diam. at the base, gradually tapering with an acuminate tip, thick-walled, slightly irregular, dark brown and ± opaque except for the extreme tip which is ± hyaline. Basal stroma absent, but the base of overmature ascomata frequently remains as a black disc-shaped or cupulate structure on the substratum surface. Peridium thin and leathery, dark brown, composed of an outer layer of strongly melanized irregular angular cells with the outer walls conspicuously thickened and completely opaque, forming knob-like extrusions, and an inner layer of flattened thin-walled pale brown cells. Ostiole surrounded by short setae. Interascal tissue sparse and inconspicuous, composed of chains of very thin-walled cells to 7 µm diam., strongly constricted at the septa. Asci in a basal fascicle, 90-105 x 8.5-10.5 µm, cylindrical, thin-walled, not fissitunicate, the apex rounded, with a short gradually tapering stalk, croziers present, apical structures not seen, not staining blue in iodine, apparently 4-spored when immature but containing eight spores adhering in pairs at maturity. Ascospores 13.5-15.5 x 5-6 x 3.5-4.5 µm, cylindric-ellipsoidal to slightly allantoid, adhering at the broader face even after discharge, becoming pale brown, slightly constricted at the ± median septum, thin- and smooth-walled, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
