Thallus superficial, well-developed, often of areole-like convex structures 100-300 µm diam., verrucose or rugose-verrucose, later irregularly elongated and aggregated, sometimes forming lobe-like extensions, pale grey to pale brown. Cephalodia frequent, dark brown to black, forming flattened, irregular, granular aggregations to 1.5 mm diam. Photobiont trebouxioid, in the cephalodia Nostoc sp. Anamorph: no information available. Teleomorph: ascomata perithecia, forming projections (0.45-) 0.7-1.2 mm diam., with an irregular and usually incomplete thalline covering, exposed parts more or less smooth to strongly roughened. involucrellum 55–130 μm thick, strongly thickened around the often distinctly depressed ostiole, in the upper part merged with the peridium. Interascal tissue absent, periphyses and periphysoides well-developed. Hymenium I+ red, KI+ blue. Asci 130–230 × 60–90 μm, ellipsoidal to clavate, structurally fissitunicate but thin-walled and frequently breaking down irregularly, 8-spored. Ascospores (50-) 63-73 (-76) × (29-) 33-41 (-47) μm, length/width ratio (1.4-) 1.6-2 (-2.2), ellipsoidal or often somewhat asymmetric, sometimes ovoid, muriform, dark brown when mature, the cell outlines often obscured, without an epispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
