Family: MycosphaerellaceaeGenus: Sphaerellothecium
SUMMARY
Colonies spreading over the surface of the host, the mycelium superficial, dark brown, sparsely branched, branching ± at right angles and forming a reticulum, the hyphae torulose, cells subglobose to quadrangular, dark reddish brown, thick-walled, walls irregularly verrucose through splitting of the outer wall layers, 5-7.5 µm diam.
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: Ascomata (25-) 30-50 (-60) µm diam., superficial, arising directly from the mycelium, black, pyriform to ± spherical, ostiolate. Peridium glabrous, 8-12 µm thick, composed of 1-2 layers of dark brown thick-walled polyhedral cells ca 10 µm diam. Interascal tissue absent. Asci 20-25 x 10-15 µm, broadly saccate, sessile, only 3-4 developing at one time in each ascoma, thick-walled and fissitunicate, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged irregularly, (9.5-) 12-14.5 (-16) x 4.5-6 (-7) µm, clavate to ellipsoidal, the apices rounded, the lower cell often slightly narrower than the upper cell, hyaline but pale brown when over-mature, 1-septate, not or slightly constricted at the ± median septum, smooth, fairly thick-walled, with a narrow gelatinous sheath.
