Teleomorph: stromata absent. Ascomata apothecia, singly or in clusters, 2-10 mm diam., discoid with a distinct, slightly raised margin, the hymenium brownish orange to bright red, surrounded by long marginal setae with shorter ones clothing the outer surface. Marginal setae uniformly dark brown, 500-2000 µm long, 25-50 µm diam. near the base which is usually bifurcate; multiseptate; accompanied by clusters of blunt pale brown obtuse hyphae to ca 100 µm in length that form a raised margin surrounding the hymenium. Interascal tissue of unbranched paraphyses 2.5-4 µm diam., expanded at the apex to 6-10 µm diam., filled when fresh with orange carotenoid pigments. Asci 250-300 x 19-25 µm, cylindrical, gradually narrowing to a short stalk, fairly thick-walled but not fissitunicate, the apex rounded and not thickened, operculate, not staining in iodine, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged ± uniseriately, 14-17 µm diam., ± globose, hyaline, aseptate, very thick-walled, without a separable perispore layer, covered in conspicuous cylindrical to bluntly conical spines 2-4 µm high and ca 2 µm broad, occasionally with some pointed spines; without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
