SUMMARY
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: stromata absent. Ascomata apothecia, singly or in clusters, 1-5 mm diam., discoid with an indistinct margin, the hymenium bright red, surrounded by long marginal setae with shorter ones clothing the outer surface which is often paler than the hymenium. Marginal setae yellowish to mid brown, paler above, 140-300 (-500) µm long, 15-20 µm diam. near the base which may be simple or bi- to trifurcate; 3- to 5-septate. Interascal tissue of unbranched paraphyses 2-3 µm diam., expanded at the apex to 6-9 µm diam., filled when fresh with orange carotenoid pigments. Asci 220-310 x 18-25 µm, cylindrical, gradually narrowing to a short stalk, fairly thick-walled but not fissitunicate, the apex rounded and not thickened, operculate, not staining in iodine, usually 8-spored. Ascospores arranged ± uniseriately, 15.5-18.5 µm diam., ± globose, hyaline, aseptate, very thick-walled, without a separable perispore layer, covered in conspicuous conical, usually acuminate spines mostly 3-5 µm high and 1.5-2 µm broad at the base; without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
