Family: XylariaceaeGenus: Nemania
SUMMARY
Anamorph: Geniculosporium sp. Conidiomata absent. Conidiophores elongate, pale brown, branched, proliferating sympodially with inconspicuous denticles over the apical part, extending 10-20 µm down the conidiophore. Conidia 1.5-4 x 1·5-2·5 µm, ellipsoidal to ovoid, pale brown, aseptate, thin-walled, smooth.
Teleomorph: stromata fully immersed to nearly superficial, 0.6-1 (-1.7) mm diam, typically containing a single ascoma but often coalescent in linear rows or in small groups with up to 5 (-10) perithecia beneath a carbonaceous outer stromatal layer 130-150 µm thick extending into the substrate, subglobose, dark brown to dull black, frequently with a flattened apex, when young emerging from a copious white hyphal tissue. Tissue between the ascomata greyish, soft, inconspicuous. Ascomata 0.5-0.8 (-1.2) mm diam., subglobose. Ostioles minutely papillate, black. Asci cylindrical, short-stalked, the spore-bearing parts 105-125 µm x 10-12 µm, the stipes 25-40 µm long, apical structure blueing in iodine, cuboid to inverted hat-shaped, 2.5-3 µm high x 3-4.5 µm µm broad, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged uniseriately, 15-18 x 8-9.5 µm, dark brown, ellipsoidal to ellipsoid-fusiform, nearly equilateral with narrowly rounded ends, with a conspicuous straight to slightly sinuous germ slit the entire spore length on the less convex side when ascospore is inequilateral, without a perispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
