SUMMARY
Stromata: 1-1.5 mm diam., flat, shining black, developing below the cuticle and penetrating deep into the cells of the epidermis and mesophyll to form a hypostroma.
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: ascomata pseudothecia, 60-115 µm diam., in dense clusters on a mat of brown hyphae developing from the stroma surface, globose, dark brown, with a wide black collar around the ostiole that is covered in setae. Peridium 6-10 µm thick, composed of dark brown thick-walled angular cells. Setae 33-100 x 4.5-6 µm diam. at the base, black, gradually tapering towards an acuminate tip. Interascal tissue of cellular pseudoparaphyses, which are filiform, septate and hyaline. Asci 37-50 x 7-10.5 µm, cylindrical to saccate with a rounded apex, ± sessile, thick-walled and fissitunicate, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged biseriately, 10-15 x 3-5 µm, ellipsoidal to clavate, greenish olivaceous to brown, slightly constricted at the ± median septum, the upper cell marginally broader than the lower one, at first smooth but becoming roughened at maturity, the content granular, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
