SUMMARY
Thallus crustose, frequently to ca 10 cm diam, composed of small, closely appressed squamules 0.5-1 mm diam on a conspicuous dark blue-black hypothallus. Squamules widely dispersed or contiguous and overlapping, irregularly rounded or slightly indented to irregularly crenulate, flattened or unevenly verrucose, pale grey, blue-grey, rarely olive-brown or brown, with a paler margin, appearing as a cracked-rimose crust.
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: ascomata apothecia, 0.3-0.9 mm diam, often numerous, scattered or in clusters; disc bright orange-brown when fresh, red-brown to chestnut-brown when dry, soon becoming markedly convex. Thalline exciple ± incomplete, grey, secondarily granular, soon excluded, often exposing a pale red-brown true exciple. True exciple composed of elongate thick-walled glassy textura globulosa-porrecta with cells 11-18 x 5-10 µm. Interascal tissue composed of thick-walled frequently branched and anastomosed pseudoparaphyses 1.5-2.5 µm diam, immersed in a gelatinous matrix that blues in iodine. Asci 65-80 x 18-21 µm, clavate to saccate, fairly long-stalked, the apex rounded, very thick-walled and with a conspicuous cap-like apical dome and an amyloid apical plug, 8-spored. Ascospores 10.9-15.1 (mean=12.8, sd=1.28, n=29) × 6.7-8.5 (mean=7.6, sd=0.5, n=29) μm, 15-22(-28) × 9-10(-11) μm including the perispore, colourless, ellipsoidal to fusiform-ellipsoidal, sometimes slightly inaequilateral, with a morphologically varied acute-ended perispore with usually a single but sometimes two attenuated apices, rather thick-walled, aseptate, smooth-walled, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages. Lichen chemical products not detected by tlc.
