Anamorph: Phomopsis sorbariae (Sacc.) Höhn. (1906). Conidiogenous cells 17-20 µm long. Alpha-conidia 6.5-9 x 2.5 µm.
Teleomorph: stromata as irregular blackening of host bark surface or present as a definite zone which often dips slightly and irregularly into the bark, ventral zone definite in wood. Ascomata 320-720 x 240-480 µm, irregularly scattered, ostioles short or often somewhat elongate and erumpent singly or in loose clusters. Ascospores 10.5-14 x 2.5-4 µm.
Wehmeyer considered this to belong within the D. eres aggregate.
