Description contributed by Graham Kinsey, CABI, based on Wehmeyer (1933).
Anamorph: Phomopsis inaequalis (Speg.) Traverso (1906). Alpha-conidia 7-10 x 2-3 µm.
Teleomorph: stromata on host surface as small pustules, 0.2-0.5 mm diam, erumpent through the adherent periderm as small clusters of ostioles, entostroma pustulate-effuse, dorsal zone running along or just beneath the bark surface and dipping into the bark or wood between perithecia. Ascomata 450-720 x 240-500 µm, flattened-spherical, scattered singly or clustered in small groups or crowded in large clusters, usually collectively erumpent, ostioles short, stout, cylindrical or sometimes elongate or bent. Asci 70-110 x 9-15 µm, clavate becoming cylindrical. Ascospores (12-)13-17(-18) x 5.5-9 µm, broadly ellipsoidal, constricted at the septum, with a large guttule in each cell.
