SUMMARY
Anamorph: conidiomata appearing before the apothecia mature, 100-300 µm diam, black, intraepidermal, lenticular to shallowly conical in cross section, with a dark brown covering layer, the spores released though an irregular split in the upper wall. Conidiogenous cells in a basal palisade, borne on short conidiophores, 5-10 x 2-2.5 µm, gradually tapering, proliferating sympodially. Conidia 4-5 x ca 1 µm, bacilliform, aseptate, hyaline, thin-walled.
Teleomorph: ascomata apothecia, 0.5-1 mm diam., scattered in prominent bleached spots, sometimes bounded by a black zone line, intraepidermal, quadrate to hexagonal, black, shining, with a distinct stellate preformed dehiscence mechanism of lighter coloured cells, opening by teeth to expose the dull yellow hymenium. Covering layer ca 30 µm thick, of carbonized cells 5-6 µm diam., periphysoids and lip cells absent. Basal stroma ca 5 µm thick, carbonized. Interascal tissue of filiform aseptate paraphyses, gradually enlarged to ca 2 µm at the apex, surrounded by a gelatinous coat. Asci 70-105 x 8-10 µm, cylindric-clavate, short-stalked, thin-walled and not fissitunicate, without a distinct apical pore or ring, not staining in iodine, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged in a fascicle, not helically coiled, 45-65 x ca 2 µm, filiform, slightly tapered towards the base, aseptate, hyaline, thin-walled, with a narrow gelatinous sheath.
