Anamorph: not known. Teleomorph: ascomata immersed apothecia, in bleached spots bounded by a delicate black line and accompanied by microsclerotia, 0.6-1.2 mm diam, circular or polygonal in outline, black, shining, without an obvious preformed dehiscence mechanism, splitting open by 4-6 irregular teeth to expose the pale orange (when dry) or grey (when wet) hymenium, intraepidermal. Covering layer ca 20 µm thick, of brown, carbonized cells 5-10 µm diam., without lip cells or periphysoids. Basal stroma ca 10 µm thick, carbonized, the cells ca 5 µm diam. Subhymenium hyaline, ca 25 µm thick, separated from the basal stroma by a hyaline subiculum with a few crystalline inclusions. Proper exciple absent. Interascal tissue of filiform paraphyses, sometimes with a pronounced apical swelling 4-5 µm diam, somewhat agglutinated, forming an epithecium. Asci 105-125 x 9-12 µm, cylindric-clavate, short-stalked to almost sessile, the apex acute and sometimes slightly attenuated, J-, 8-spored. Ascospores in a fascicle, not helically coiled, 60-80 x 1.5-2.5 µm, hyaline, aseptate, thin- and smooth-walled, sometimes with a narrow gelatinous sheath.
