Ascomata 800-1500 x 500-800 µm, single or in small clusters, ellipsoidal to cylindrical, black or with a brown scurfy surface, the ostiolar region hardly papillate. Subiculum absent. Peridium composed of an outer thin layer of heavily melanized rather amorphous textura angularis, a thick median layer of ± hyaline textura intricata within a gelatinous matrix, and an inner layer of pale brown thin-walled flattened textura angularis. Interascal tissue of paraphyses, copious, filform, longer than the asci. Asci 240-350 x 15-20 µm, cylindrical with a long tapering stalk, fairly thin-walled, the apex rounded to truncate with an indistinct J- apical ring, 8-spored. Ascospores 19-29 x 10-14 µm, ellipsoidal to ellipsoidal fusiform, sometimes slightly inaequilateral, aseptate, thick-walled, smooth, becoming dark brown, with apical and basal germ pores and a wide gelatinous sheath.
Anamorph: Conidiomata absent. Conidiophores absent. Conidiogenous cells formed singly or in clusters of 2-5 from pale brown vegetative hyphae, 4-5.5 x 2.5-3.5 µm, almost hyaline to dark brown, subglobose to ampulliform, proliferating percurrently, with a prominent collarette 2-3 µm diam. Conidia 2-3 µm diam, globose to subglobose, sometimes pyriform, hyaline to pale brown, thin-walled, aseptate, smooth, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
