Anamorph: conidiomata pycnidia, completely immersed in gall-like deformations of the host, the galls massive irregular convex swellings to 1-1.5 mm diam making the branches on which they occur geniculate, galls concolorous with the thallus; conidiomata 50-70 µm diam., globose to subglobose with the ostiole 40-50 µm diam. and depressed below the surface level of the gall, orange at first but becoming brownish with age. Conidiomatal wall translucent, hyaline, 12-20 µm thick, becoming slightly more swollen and orange to brownish near the ostiole, formed of irregularly orientated entwined and compacted hyphae 2-3 µm diam. Conidiophores absent. Conidiogenous cells arising from the inner wall of the conidioma, 7-12 µm long, mainly 3-4 µm diam. at the base and tapering to 2-3 µm at the apex, elongate-ampulliform, the bases often expanded and tapering markedly towards the apex, hyaline, smooth-walled, annellidic with to at least 4 annellations, unbranched, simple or occasionally 1-septate. Conidia (7-) 8-10 (-10.5) x 4-5-5 (-6) µm, abundantly produced, not catenate, slimy and adhering together in large groups in aqueous preparations, fusiform to pyriform, often asymmetrical, the apex often somewhat attenuated, the base more markedly so and also abruptly truncate when about 1 µm thick, hyaline, aseptate, often with a large guttule, smooth-walled. Teleomorph: ascomata apothecia, 100-250 (-300) µm diam., black-brown, ± distinctly marginate, flat, sessile, often in clusters and then partly confluent. Lateral wall 10-20 µm thick, dark brown to black-brown. Hypothecium brown, 20-305 µm thick. Hymenium 35-40 (-45) µm tall, colourless to pale brown. Epithecium dark brown to black-brown. Interascal tissue of paraphyses 1-2 µm in diam. Asci (30-) 35-50 x 7.5-8.5 µm, ± cylindrical, I+ pale bluish. Ascospores (7- ) 8.5-10.5 (-12) x 2.5-3.5 (-4) µm, ellipsoidal.
