Thallus grey-green to greenish, of minute granules or finger-like lobes 0.02-0.05 mm wide, often aggregated into larger, lobed squamules. Surface cells without pigment, often with papillae 1-2.5 μm high. Prothallus indistinct. Sterile globules frequent, 70-240 x 70-150 µm, subspherical to ellipsoidal, black, glossy, superficial or with the lower third immersed in the thallus, composed of thin-walled hyaline to pigmented cells each containing a large oil drop. Anamorph: not known. Teleomorph: ascomata perithecia, rare, superficial or partly immersed, 250-600 µm diam. and 300-800 µm tall, ovoid, black, matt, lacking an involucrellum. Peridium thick, more or less layered, the outer part of ± globose densely pigmented cells, the middle layer of similarly shaped but unpigmented cells, and the innermost layer of compressed, thin-walled hyaline cells. Hymenial gel hemiamyloid: I + red (I + blue at low concentrations of iodine), K/I + blue. Interascal tissue absent, periphyses and periphysoids present. Asci fissitunicate, I –, K/I –, 8-spored. Ascospores (32-)37-50 × (15-)16-26 μm, ellipsoidal, hyaline, thin-walled, muriform, with (22-)35-60 cells visible in optical section.
