Thallus superficial, moderately thick, matt, greenish grey to grey or grey-brown, slightly uneven, usually verrucose, of indistinct areole-like units 80-300 µm diam., sometimes much reduced. Cephalodia frequent, almost black, forming verrucose aggregations. Photobiont a green alga, with Nostoc in the cephalodia. Anamorph: not known. Teleomorph: ascomata perithecia, 400-700 (-800) µm diam., protruding and in the lower part usually with a moderately thick thalline cover which may extend upwards and leave only the ostiole exposed. Involucrellum well developed, 80–125 μm thick, in the upper part fused with the perithecial wall. Interascal tissue absent, periphyses and periphysoidswell-developed. Hymenial gel I+ red (+ blue at very low concentrations of I), K/I+ blue. Asci 105–195 × 58–115 μm, ellipsoidal to clavate, K/I–, fissitunicate, the wall thickened above when young, 8-spored. Ascospores (39-) 51-68 (-81) × (22-) 26-34 (-40) μm, length/width ratio (1.5-) 1.7-2.3 (-3), ellipsoidal to ovoid, often slightly curved, muriform, hyaline or faintly brownish (when over-mature), with no colour visible in the cell walls except in degenerated spores, smooth, without an epispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
