Thallus very variable, thin and rimose to coarsely warted, to 2.5 mm thick, pale fawn-grey to dark brown, sometimes faintly olivaceous, usually ± glossy, effuse or rarely delimited by a dark prothalline line. Anamorph: conidiomata pycnidia, often present, rarely abundant, immersed in the thallus, the wall pale, the ostiole black and punctiform. Conidia 8-11 × 0.7-1 μm, needle-shaped, straight, hyaline, aseptate. Teleomorph: ascomata apothecia, 0.4-2.2 mm diam., usually numerous, immersed to sessile, usually glossy. Thalline exciple concolorous with the thallus, conspicuous and mostly persistent, swollen, smooth or rarely slightly corrugated. Disc flat to convex, usually darker than the inconspicuous true exciple, usually dark chocolate brown. Epithecium pale brown to olivaceous, diffuse, wthout crystals. Hymenium 50-60 μm thick, hyaline. Hypothecium 80-100 µm thick, hyaline or pale yellow. Asci 35-60 x 10-15 µm, broadly clavate, Lecanora-type with a distinct ocular chamber, 8-spored. Ascospores 8-13 × 3-5 μm, fusiform to ellipsoid-fusiform with distinctly pointed apices, aseptate, hyaline, fairly thick-walled, without a perispore or gelatinous sheath. Chemistry: sections C–, K–, KC+ pink (especially cortex), Pd–, usually UV+ white (lobaric acid, ± zeorin and 3(-5) unidentified substances).
