Mycelium well-developed, hyphopodiate, with copious superficial hyphae to 4 µm diam., thick-walled and dark brown, frequently branched and forming complex networks especially around the fruit-bodies. Hyphopodia formed as lateral branches from the superficial hyphae, 6-8 µm in diam., roughly circular to elliptical in outline but often somewhat irregular in form, paler and thinner-walled than the superficial hyphae, each with a single penetration peg ca 1 µm diam. Anamorph: conidiomata pycnothyria, similar in structure to the ascomata but apparently opening via an irregular split rather than an ostiole, 120-140 µm diam, shallowly domed, dark brown to black, without setae. Lower wall composed of a single layer of globose to angular thin-walled hyaline cells 4-5 µm diam. Conidiophores absent, the conidiogenous cells formed directly from the lower wall, 3.5-4.5 µm diam., doliiform, apparently proliferating percurrently. Conidia 11.15-12.5 x 2.5-3 µm, cylindrical with rounded ends, hyaline, aseptate, thin-walled, smooth, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages. Teleomorph: stromata absent. Ascomata thyriothecia, 170-220 µm diam, initially almost flat with a prominent central ostiole, becoming shallowly domed with the ostiole less apparent. Upper wall dark brown to black, composed of a single layer of radiating elongate cells 8-10 x 2-3 µm in size, very thick-walled and often becomng occluded, the margins strongly fimbriate and hyphal in structure. Ostiolar cells difficult to observe due to the extent of melanization. Interascal tissue not seen. Asci 29-35 x 7.5-9 µm, narrowly ovoid with an attenuated apical part, short-stalked to almost sessile, the apex rounded, fissitunicate with rostrate dehiscence, apical structures not seen, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged biseriately, 12-14.5 x 2.5-3.5 µm, narrowly fusiform to fusiform-clavate, slightly constricted and sometimes fragmenting at the ± median septum, hyaline, thin-walled, smooth, setae not seen, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
