Teleomorph: Ascomata apothecia, 200–600(–800) × (100–)150–250 μm, initially immersed, becoming erumpent and breaking through the host cortex, the margins frequently covered by cortical fragments, ± round or more often elongate to irregular in form, sometimes with an undulate margin, with a ± distinct, sometimes prominent dark reddish or blackish matt to slightly shiny margin 25–50 μm broad and a dark reddish shiny applanate or uneven disc. Exciple 20–50 μm thick, orange-brown, K−, N−, laterally of thick-walled, elongate rarely branched ± parallel or slightly interwoven hyphae 3·5–5·5 μm diam., basally 20–50 μm thick, paler, of conglutinated, thick-walled and ± isodiametric cells; without hairs. Subhymenium hyaline or brownish. Epithecium relatively thick, orange-brown, K−, N−. Hymenium 75–90 μm tall, hyaline to yellowish, I−, K/I−. Interascal tissue of paraphyses 1·5–2·5 μm diam., rarely branched, apically slightly swollen, with few oil guttules. Asci 55–80 × 7–12 μm, ± cylindrical, thin-walled, the apex rounded and thickened, always with a distinct ocular chamber, without croziers, I−, K/I−, 8-spored. Ascospores uniseriately arranged, 6–10 × 5–7·5 μm, subglobose to broadly ellipsoidal, aseptate, hyaline, with one large lipid guttule, rather thick-walled, the wall finely verruculose, without a perispore, gelatinous sheath or appendages.
