SUMMARY
Thallus areolate-squamulose, wide spreading and often forming extensive patches, rarely composed of scattered areoles. Areoles 0.5-3 mm diam., very variable, mostly contiguous, irregular in shape, flat, at times sub-lobulate or weakly imbricate, the surface flat to uneven, irregular, pale to dark red- or yellow-brown, often with black margins and undersides.
Anamorph: not known.
Teleomorph: ascomata apothecia, 0.2-1 mm diam., 1(-5) per areole, usually numerous, at first punctiform, later concave or flat, usually angular or irregular, immersed, never elevated or emergent, disk red-brown to black, usually darker than the thallus, smooth or slightly rough, slightly depressed or level with the thallus. Hymenium (70-)80-120 μm high. Interascal tissue of paraphyses, ca 1.5 μm diam. at base, 2-3 μm diam. at tips. Asci more than 100-spored, clavate, apical dome K/I–.AsciAsci multispored (more than 100-spored), clavate, the apical dome K/I-. Ascospores 4-6 × 1-1.5 μm, narrowly ellipsoidal or cylindrical, hyaline, aseptate, smooth-walled, without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.
Chemistry: thallus C+ red, K–, KC+ red, Pd– (gyrophoric acid).
